Keys for Success

Improvement needs to be led from the inside out for microsystems and from the outside in for leaders creating the conditions for improvement
(Nelson et al, 2007)

The following conditions or factors need to be in place for meaningful and long lasting improvement work to take place:-

From the Leaders or Enablers

  • Basic understanding of quality improvement in a healthcare context
  • Communication of the MCA “offer” to colleagues
  • Enabling those who want to engage in improvement work by creating the space  to engage in improvement work
  • An environment where hierarchy is flattened and everyone has an equal say
  • An open minded approach to understand and define the issues before designing the solution
  • Patient Involvement

From the Microsystem Team

  • A team that takes “ownership” of improvement work is far more likely to understand the process and therefore develop the capability to continually improve the care they deliver in future
  • A multi-disciplinary team that can meet to do improvement work at least one hour on a weekly basis
  • Team commitment (representatives from all staff groups in the microsystem at each meeting)
  • An open minded approach to understand and define the issues before designing the solution
  • Patient involvement
